Review of the Chase Freedom(SM) Credit Card
Review of Chase Freedom(SM)
|
Summary – My Chase Flexible Rewards Card was just converted to the Chase Freedom(SM) Credit Card, and I will review the details on this excellent rewards program.
Rewards – The Chase Freedom(SM) Credit Card has been through several changes in its rewards program. This rewards program is pretty good compared to the rewards programs of other credit cards. You can choose to redeem your rewards for cash, merchandise, or travel rewards. You earn at a minimum, a 1% rebate (or 1 point depending on how you look at it) for every dollar that you spend on the card. You can earn unlimited rebates. But if all this card were to give was 1%, then it wouldn’t be very good, but there is a lot more.
Rotating Categories – The Chase Freedom(SM) Credit Card now pays 5% rebates on categories on a 3 month rotating basis, instead of paying more than 1% on certain expenses in its previous format.
Online Store Discounts – Chase offers cardholders the chance to shop through their online shopping portal and receive discounts or rebates when they shop through their Chase account. Shopping through this method allows the merchants and Chase to track your purchases and credit you the appropriate rebates.
Rewards – Travel – The Chase Freedom(SM) Credit Card allows you to redeem points for travel items. There are several ways to do this. You can book your travel through Chase’s online travel booking site, which is actually powered by Orbitz. With this method, you can use a combination of points and cash to pay. You can also transfer points into Continental OnePass Miles, or to your hotel frequent guest program, or even to an auto rental reward program.
Rewards – Merchandise & Gift Cards – Like most other programs, Chase Freedom(SM) also allows you to redeem points for gift cards and merchandise. You can donate points to charities as well.
Fees – Good news, the Chase Freedom(SM) Credit Card does not have an annual fee!
Conclusion – This card is very flexible in redeeming cash rebates and points for merchandise and travel rewards. The value received for cash payouts are fairly good, in comparison to other credit card reward programs. The Chase Freedom(SM) Credit Card, is a good choice for people who want the flexibility to earn both cash rebates and use points for other items like travel rewards.
The new Chase rebate formula is very similar to Discover’s redemption format. If you are going to use Chase’s shopping portal, you also may want to check out the Discover® More® Card as they have a list of online merchant partners as well. There is some marchant overlap, and you may want to determine for yourself which card pays higher rebates for specific merchants.
